Pachinko Machine Expiration Dates

Pachinko machines could only be used in a Pachinko Parlor for 12 months. A sticker with an expiration date was attached to the playfield in one of the four corners outside of the area where the ball bounces off the pins.

You may be able to determine the year of manufacture from the expiration date, however the sticker may have been removed or fallen off.

The following expiration sticker was used in the 1950s to the mid 1960s.  The number 1965 is the year of expiration so the machine was most likely manufactured in the prior year, 1964.

The following is a type of expiration sticker used from the late 1960s through the 1970s. Some have only Japanese writing but most will have a few numbers somewhere on the sticker.  The first two numbers represent the  Japanese Imperial Year.  Next is a Japanese character followed by a 3, 6, 9 or 12 representing the month. Add 1925 to the Imperial Year to determine the Western Year.  For example: 51 + 1925 = 1976.  The 3 represents March so this machine expired in March of 1976 and was most likely manufactured in the prior year, 1975.

Note:  Vintage pachinko machines did not have serial or model numbers.  You may see these numbers ‘239-2 or 239-4’ on a sticker but they have nothing to do with the age or identification of the machine.
